A FEMA community in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi that was scheduled to close at the end of August will remain open at least through January of 2008.

FEMA granted the extension to Bay Village Trailer Park because the supply of

apartments still has not emerged to meet the needs of the population in this coastal community.  Bay St. Louis is home to a hospital and to the John C. Stennis Space Center.

A spokesman for the agency was quoted as saying that Katrina destroyed 247 "affordable" apartments in Bay St. Louis and another 496 apartments in Waveland.

FEMA officials did indicate that they might begin to charge lot rent to residents in the future.

A second FEMA-run park closed in the nearby vicinity at the end of July.
