So when people want a prepaid card, what brand do they go to first?
NetSpend appears to be the hands-down winner.
Suprising to me is that Rush Card has consistently outpaced Green Dot. Equally surprising is the lack of interest in AMEX Bluebird.
Chase Liquid had an initial surge back in the summer of 2012, but since then it has fallen off steeply.
I've made a link to a chart I put together with the help of Google Trends. Google Trends is a great resource for charting brand appeal. This relatively under-the-radar tool will allow anyone to construct a comparison of search term popularity for a period of up to ten years. This one compares traffic for Green Dot, Bluebird, NetSpend, and Rush. Rush has until only recently been far and away the highest-ranked search destination.
This chart only counts the time since 2010. One fun thing to do is to add the term Kardashian Kard. You will see that Kardashian Kard briefly eclipsed both NetSpend and Green Dot back in November 2010.
Then I tried to compare some of the names in the next-generation of prepaid: T-Mobile Mobile Money, Univision Tarjeta, GoBank, and TracPhone Secure Cash Card. Mobile Money seems to have established the initial beachhead here.
